Sammy’s Review

Sammy’s – Welcome to Burger Nirvana

One of my favorite TV shows is Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, which is all about finding awesome little restaurants in unlikely places. Sammy’s in Provo is just such a place.

Situated in downtown Provo, caddy corner from the NuSkin building, you’ll find a tiny little restaurant called Sammy’s. Specializing in absolutely amazing burgers, fries and shakes, and are frequently populated by a crowd of hungry college students.

The walls are adorned with hundreds of Polaroid photos of the many happy customers, as well as a selection of local artwork. It has the feel of a hip, retro diner, perfectly suited to the Gen Y college crowd. They even play music from obscure and local bands.

Now, for the best part: the food…

They have a lot of custom burgers on the menu, but I prefer the build your own option. I start out with a ¼ pound beef patty ($3.50), and add to that bacon ($.50), provolone cheese ($.50), and sautéed mushrooms and onions ($1.00), bringing the burger to a grand total of $5.50.

The burgers are delicious, well cooked but not the least bit dry. The buns are lightly toasted, and they have an awesome condiment bar where they finish off your burger with your choice of flavors (ketchup and mayo for me).

While they serve both seasoned fries and sweet potato fries ($2.50), I prefer the sweet potato fries. They are thin cut, fresh, and fantastic. They are served with a house made fry sauce which is the best that I have tasted. One order will easily feed two people, but it is worth it to order both kinds of fries.

I round out my meals with one of their signature Pie Shakes ($4), which is made with a slice of their homemade pies. My favorite is the strawberry cheesecake shake, with fresh strawberries and a slice of cheesecake tossed in.  Truly amazing.

They have also added some additional shakes to their menu, made from various types of cake and cupcakes courtesy of The Sweet Tooth Fairy sweet shop. While that isn’t really my thing, it sure is a creative twist on the milkshake.

If you make it out for lunch between 11am and 3pm, they have an awesome lunch special. You get a burger, fries and a drink for $6.99, which will definitely save you some money. They have a frequent meal card as well, which you are definitely going to want once you’ve tried their food!

After much deliberation, I hereby declare Sammy’s in Provo to be my all-time favorite burger joint, with the best burgers, fries and shakes I’ve ever had.
